An old adage says, "If you play with fire, you will get burnt," warning against reckless choices because of their dreadful consequences. A Christian who contemplates marriage to an unbeliever, is unwisely welcoming an enemy of God into his or her life and lineage, making them unlikely to "live happily ever after," not to mention, making it difficult to honor God. If you have ever considered marrying an unbeliever and did not go through with it, you "dodged a bullet," whether you heeded the gentle nudging of God or the other person initiated the breakup. Here are reasons why single Christians should reject the thought of marrying an unbeliever, and should look for someone with like-minded interests, in Christ. For Christians who have already married an unbeliever, there is only one thing that can rectify an unequally-yoked union (other than divorce), but first it is necessary to know the perils of marrying an unbeliever.
Christians must protect their relationship with God, above all else, and marriage is under attack from unbelievers because Christians are often not armed to recognize "romance" from an unbeliever as manipulation and a demonic attack to steal, abuse and destroy one's soul.
If you are reading this, after marrying an unbeliever, you are in a spiritual war, and the one thing you can do is win your spouse over to Christ. You must equip yourself with the weapons of Christ and prepare to use them, at all times. Equipping yourself starts with knowing the Word of God. Winning a spouse to Christ is your only hope to avoid regrets forever. Read "How to Hear God to Prosper," a modern-day outline of the God's love, and then leave it out for God to convict your spouse to pick it up and read it.

- Ungodly influence in your life. An unbelieving spouse has a certain control over the decisions a Christian spouse makes or doesn't make. An unbeliever may discourage a Christian spouse from going to church or witnessing to others. Therefore, the Christian is less likely to be effective for Christ.
- Difficult to raise Christian children. A Christian may not be able to adequately raise his or her children to accept Jesus because the other parent may be more influential in swaying them to not believe in Christ, which can put the children at a disadvantage for eternity. Just the fact that most kids don't like going to church, can make them sway towards the ungodly parent, while growing up, and sidetrack them from learning the importance of Christ, which affects everything, from joy and love to protection and salvation.
- Unrest in your home. An unbeliever is likely to sabotage the activities of a Christian because the enemy is essentially at war with the Christian. Even though, it may seem extreme, the unbeliever often has manipulated a mate into marriage, in order to wage war against Christianity. While you may wonder why someone would do this, if you think about the high rate of divorce, you understand there is truth in this statement. Some ungodly people manipulate to attach with someone for financial gain, and divorce, even after only a few years of marriage, can put a person at a greater financial advantage--while leaving the other person at a disadvantage.
- Watered-down Christianity. Christians are less effective because they essentially are not living by the dictates of Christ, in the mere fact that they are unequally yoked; they are living by the dictates of an ungodly person, every day in their own home.
- Spousal worship. A Christian, married to an unbeliever, has essentially disregarded God and is worshiping his or her spouse. Even though, a person calls him or herself a Christian, he or she is out of the will of God, when he or she partners in marriage with an unbeliever.
- No love in the marriage. Marrying an unbeliever entangles a Christian financially, physically, emotionally and socially with someone who is essentially an enemy of God. The enemy loves to marry God's people because they love being worshiped, like God. Mind you, they have no love for their spouse; they love themselves only. Love is replaced with lust.
- Eternal jeopardy. The greatest danger of marrying an unbeliever is that a Christian puts his or her eternal life in jeopardy, because the Christian has betrayed God, being in love and loyal to someone who has no regard for Christ.
- No power to convert. A Christian assumes he or she can convert an unbelieving person after they are married, but that is extremely naïve and dangerous because the unbeliever assumes he or she can stop the Christian from being loyal to God. If a Christian can't convince a person of Jesus and to be baptized in Christ before marrying, it is essentially impossible after marriage.
- No wisdom, no prosperity. Marrying an unbeliever indicates a terrible lapse of judgment. Having a judgment problem on a major issue, such as who you marry, puts your entire ability to make sound judgment in jeopardy, in order to avoid dangers in society and to live the prosperous life God intends for His people. Family members, friends and co-workers questions a Christian's faith when he or she marries a non-Christian, and they become cautious of that Christian's judgment. - All false gods offend Jesus. Marrying someone who is an unbeliever, includes anyone who does not accept Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior and God. Marrying someone of a false religion is just as damaging as marrying an atheist. Marrying a non-Christian is marrying an enemy of God.
